The National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) is an independent research institute under the Danish Ministry of the Environment. NERI’s mission is to provide a sound and informed scientific basis for making environmental decisions at the political, administrative and commercial levels.
The object of NERI’s work is to help fulfil the Government’s goal of an environmental policy based on scientific knowledge. The Statutory Order governing NERI assigns the Institute responsibility for research, consultancy services, monitoring and information activities within the environment and nature areas. This includes the atmospheric environment, the inland and marine environments, the terrestrial environment, as well as concerning the relationships between society’s activities and the state of the environment and nature.
NERI undertakes both applied research, directed at alleviating specific environmental problems, and long-term strategic research. The research activities support NERI’s scientific consultancy and monitoring work. NERI undertakes monitoring in order to evaluate the effect of political/administrative measures and to provide an overview of developments in order to facilitate the early identification of environmental problems.
NERI serves as scientific advisor to the Danish Parliament and the Ministry of the Environment, as well as to other public authorities, private organisations and enterprises. The advice is provided in the form of analyses, reports and replies to inquiries, as well as through the participation of NERI staff in various commissions and committees. Our research will involve three departments.

The Department of Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology assesses potential risks associated with the use of microorganisms for industrial and environmental purposes, evaluates the prospects of using microorganisms as sustainable clean technology, and researches chemodynamics of persistent organic contaminants in the environment.

The Department of Terrestrial Ecology conducts research and counselling on the release of genetically modified plants and terrestrial ecotoxicology, in particular effects of pesticides, other chemicals, and ecological farming on the environment, as well as determines critical load, and maps the effect of air pollution on sensitive ecosystems.

The Department of Policy Analysis develops and communicates knowledge about the interactions between the activities of the society and the environmental impacts. This includes assessment of potential measures reducing the damaging effects. The Department contributes through its strategic research and development activities to the knowledge base of environmental politics.
