The Institute of Environmental and Natural Sciences at Lancaster University comprises about 45
academic personnel. The Environmental Science Department within the Institute is rated as ’excellent ’
in teaching and ’excellent’ in research, under the UK assessment schemes. Environmental Chemistry is
the largest grouping within the Department. Professor Jones is one of three Environmental Chemistry
Professors, and 1 of 7 Environmental Chemistry faculty. Professor Jones heads the Environmental
Organic Chemistry and Ecotoxicology research group, typically comprising 20-25 researchers (postdocs/
PhD students/technical support) at any one time. The group investigates the multi-media fate and
behaviour of pollutants, focussing on the sources, emissions, environmental transfers and cycling of
persistent organic pollutants. Air-soil exchange, soil systems and food chain transfers provide the
current focus. Much of the research is of an applied nature, with funding from central Government and
industry, as well as researcgt councils.
