For 35 years, Bourgas University “Prof. As Zlatarov” has grown into a modern university structure.
The first step towards this structure was the adherence to the Magna Charta of European universities
as early as 1988. Besides the faculties of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,
the following new faculties were developed – Business and Humanities, Faculty of Pedagogy, the
College of Tourism and the Medical Colleges. We are proud that our University has a considerable
scientific potential: 80 our 200 lecturers have the academic ranks Professor or Associate Professor, 50
others have PhDs. Their experience has found manifestation in about 150 monographs and textbooks
and 6000 scientific publications in the country and abroad. This fact is worthy of admiration because
the prestige of a university is mainly due to the research work carried out there.
Our academic body
has also greatly contributed to the success of European community financed programs, such as
TEMPUS, COST, PHARE.
We have established fruitful co-operation with institutes and universities
in the country and abroad - Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, the USA, etc.
LMC has a research
staff of 22 scientists and 2 technicians: Including 2 professors, 2 associate professors, 18 research
associates (chemists, physicists, programmers and matematicents). The University provides to LMC 7
computer labs (including utilities) with the following computer facilities: a HP C100/9000 workstation
(128 MB RAM, UNIX, used as www, NFS and mail server) and about 20 PC’s (typical configuration:
Pentium/Pentium IV, 512 MB RAM, ~20 GB HD, MS Windows). All computers are in the University
LAN. For computations, other university-owned UNIX workstations and an IBM 4331 mainframe are
used, as well. These facilities will be fully utilized for the present project. LMC has contract
relationships with several State agencies, such as US EPA, Danish EPA, Environment Canada, Health
Canada, NITE – Japan and large number of industrial companies, such as 3M, AstraZeneca, DuPont,
Proctor and Gamble, ExxonMobil.
