The Department of Forest Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is the only institution that trains forest scientists in Switzerland. It currently consists of 6 sections and 8 professorships, covering the entire range of forest sciences. The Mountain Forest Ecology Group is an independent research unit that was founded in September 1999. It is devoted to investigating natural patterns and processes in mountain forest ecosystems towards improving the management of these vital and often fragile systems in an era of multiple and often conflicting forest uses, including protection, wood production, carbon storage, diversity, and recreation.
