Umuå University was established in 1965 and is now one of the large universties in Sweden with five
faculties.
The department of Ecology and Environmental Science was created in 1999 by a fusion of several
departments in order to stress, strengthen and develop the research in different disciplines of ecology
and environmental science. The department has many doctoral students and postdocs from different
countries in Europe and North America. Research activities comprize population ecology, evolution
ecology, system ecology, paleoecology, landscape ecology, and physical geography. Environmental
science research focuses on the effects of antropenic influences on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems,
such as pollution of nutrients, metals and organic compounds and effcts of land use and climate and
climate change. The department includes the Umeå Marine Science Centre and the Climate Impacts
Research Centre. Research is carried out in terrestrial northern ecosystems ranging from the tundra to
coniferous forests and in lakes, rivers and marine systems of the north.
