The University of Castilla-La Mancha is a public institution devoted to teaching and research. It is a
regional university and, thus, is organised in provincial campuses. The Department of Environmental
Sciences is located in the Toledo campus and serves the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The
department has 22 researchers from the fields of ecology, plant sciences, zoology and climate. Currently,
its members are involved in fire ecology, plant and animal biodiversity, and climate modelling projects,
among other, and participate in the following EU funded projects: ATEAM, SPREAD, ERAS,
BIOASSES, PRUDENCE, EASY. In addition, the Department is funded by other national, regional and
private sources. The Department is new (5 years old) but during this time it has made itself visible within
the country and beyond. The Department is equipped with the main facilities needed for this type of
project and has several sites within 1-2 hs distance from campus where experimental work is being
carried out, including experimentation with fire, and landscape scale, plant surveys in burned lands.
Further, landscape-scale, detailed plant and animal surveys have also been carried out in nearby areas
within the framework of previous EU and nationally funded projects.
