| | The UFZ is a large (650 staff) national research centre devoted
entirely to environmental research with twelve research departments,
among them the Departments of Community Ecology, Ecological Modelling,
Applied Landscape Ecology, and Ecological Economics, Law and
Environmental Sociology. The Department of Conservation Biology and
Natural Resources is one of four research coordination departments of
the UFZ, responsible for the scientific co-ordination and synthesis of
major research projects in conservation biology and landscape ecology
(with national and international partners).
Major current research topics are assessment methods for biodiversity,
drivers of biodiversity processes and change (like disturbance regimes,
succession, biological invasions, habitat loss and fragmentation),
indicator systems for ecological changes, strategies for sustainable
land use, species survival in fragmented landscapes, and the selection
and implementation of a net of priority sites for biodiversity
conservation. The research activities are characterized by the
integration of natural and social sciences (Sociology, Ecological
Economics, Law). Our experiences in investigation of the drivers of
biodiversity, in assessment methods, in ecological modelling, in
integrating natural and social sciences in biodiversity research and
spreading excellence in these fields are of general relevance for ALARM.
UFZ staff is highly experienced in the scientific co-ordination,
synthesis, and extension of small to large applied research projects (5
- 100 scientists). Since its foundation in 1992, UFZ has participated
in 44 EU projects, co-ordinating 14 of them. 22 of these projects (7
co-ordinated by UFZ) have started in the 5th EU Framework programme.
A nationally funded research project which focussed on species survival
in fragmented landscapes has been co-ordinated by Dr. Josef Settele and
Dr. Klaus Henle (approx. 80 partners of 10 different institutions).
They both coordinated 2 further large projects (MOSAIK & RIVA, see
chapter C5b). Within the fields of “terrestrial biodiversity” and
“ecosystem vulnerability” of the 5th FP, UFZ presently coordinates the
EU projects MACMAN (start 1st Feb. 2002; www.macman-project.de;
coordinator: Josef Settele) and FRAP (start in early 2003; coordinator:
Klaus Henle) and is involved in GREENVEINS (partner: Stefan Klotz) as
well as in the networks BIOFORUM (www.nbu.ac.uk/bioforum/) and
BIOPLATFORM (www.bioplatfomr.info/). In the field of research
infrastructure UFZ is partner within LEDA (Life-History traits of the
Northwest European flora: A database). The MacMan project, which at
present includes around 100 scientists and stakeholders, in particular
proofs our ability to adequately handle large projects. Although only 8
partners from 6 European countries are contractors, we included 12
subcontractors and around 15 associated partners in our larger circle.
This represents around 15 European countries with a large NAS
participation. The entire experience in these diverse coordination
tasks will be used to benefit ALARM. UFZ administration, including the
financial, legal and infrastructural departments can therefore
guarantee a profound management of the entire IP.
